Spanish Colonial Demonstration Farm

Los Compadres, now Mission Heritage Partners, raised funds to restore the Spanish Colonial farm that once helped feed the residents of Mission San Juan. It remains the only Spanish Colonial Demonstration Farm in the National Park Service, and the only one in the United States to use its original historic farmlands. The group also underwrote the salary for a qualified agricultural expert who worked with volunteers to till the soil, plant and harvest many of the same crops once raised at the original Spanish Colonial farm. The 5-acre plot is also irrigated as it was in the 18th century – with water led from the San Antonio River through an acequia onto the farm fields.
