Invest in Historic Masonry Preservation
The preservation efforts at the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are in for a big boost! Mission Heritage Partners, the official friends group to the park, and the National Park Service are pleased to announce that the Historic Masonry Preservation Project has been selected to receive a Centennial Challenge grant awarded by Congress.
The grant totals $150,000. Mission Heritage Partners is required to raise matching funds to secure the government allocation. The Centennial Challenge program was launched in 2015 to create public-private partnerships to help reduce the maintenance backlog in national parks.
Each donor gift designated to Mission Heritage Partners for the Historic Masonry Preservation Project will be matched dollar for dollar to help the National Park Service:
- Restore capacity to the park’s masonry crew to preserve more than 270,000 square feet of historic masonry within the park
- Create capacity to conduct and oversee critical preservation documentation of historical masonry walls
“We’re thrilled to work with Mission Heritage Partners and the community to protect the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in ways we could not do on our own,” Superintendent Mardi Arce said. “Building and leveraging partnership support is especially critical as we prepare national parks for a second century of park experiences for visitors.”
“Mission Heritage Partners is honored to meet the Centennial Challenge with the National Park Service,” Board Chair Allison Elder said. “It is our privilege to invest in a project that will protect the greatest concentration of Spanish Colonial architecture in the United States and a major part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. The preservation, stewardship and protection work we will engage in serves to increase a connection to this special place for all to enjoy—there could be nothing more gratifying.”
“With every gift, we’re making strides toward a secure future for the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park,” said Frances “Rosebud” Coffey, Executive Director for Mission Heritage Partners. “We have $150,000 to raise and feel confident that those who love and appreciate the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park will pitch in to make it happen.”
The masonry preservation project is one of 109 projects funded at 30 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam. Since 2015, the NPS Centennial Challenge program has leveraged more than $68 million in funding from Congress to attract more than $102 million from partner organizations to support hundreds of projects across the country. This year Congress provided $23 million for the projects which will be matched by $25 million from more than 90 park partners.
